U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in Brussels, Belgium on July 12. The meeting was accompanied by satisfactory praise for the two countries' level of partnership. Minister Mammadyarov emphasized the significance of continued U.S. support for the final communiqué of the NATO Brussels Summit, which included Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Regional issues were part of the discussion, and the U.S. expressed their thanks for Azerbaijan's support for NATO's Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. Minister Mammadyarov additionally provided the group with information regarding his meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan on July 11 in Brussels, also attended by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs. The Azerbaijani representatives later invited their U.S. counterparts to visit Azerbaijan in the near future, to which they gladly agreed. Also in attendance was the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell, Senior Director of the National Security Council Fiona Hill, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to the U.S. Elin Suleymanov, and Head of Mission of Azerbaijan to NATO Gaya Mammadov.
